🐾 Dog Owner's Guide
Your dog's whole life,
one page.
From first puppy gear to senior dog beds. What to buy, and when.
This page is organised by life stage — chronologically, the way you'll actually live it. Read top to bottom if you're starting from scratch, or jump straight to where your dog is now. Each stage covers what actually matters, what can wait, and what mistakes are easy to make.
Not sure which stage?Puppy = under 12 months. Adult = roughly 1–7 years (shorter for large breeds — Great Danes and similar are considered senior from around 5–6). Senior = when you start seeing the signs: slower mornings, reluctance on stairs, less interest in long walks.
Stage 1 · Puppy · 0–12 months
Puppy: get the basics right early
The first few weeks set habits that stick. A puppy introduced to tooth brushing, harnesses, and nail clippers early will accept them for life. One introduced to them at two years will make you earn every session. Start as you mean to go on.
🦮
A no-pull harness Must have
Start with a harness from day one — not a collar. Puppies pull, and collar pressure on a growing neck causes real damage. A harness with a front clip gives you control and starts loose-lead training immediately. You'll likely need to resize as they grow.

🦷
Start dental care now Must have
This is the one thing most owners regret skipping. A puppy at 8–12 weeks will accept a finger brush in seconds. The same dog at two years will need weeks of patient desensitisation. Start with a silicone finger brush, no paste, just a few seconds. Build from there.

A decent bed — washable cover essential Must have
Puppies have accidents. Get a bed with a removable, machine-washable cover from the start. You don't need memory foam yet — that matters more for older dogs. Focus on something easy to clean and big enough to grow into.

✂️
Nail clippers — safety guard only Nice to have
Same logic as teeth. A puppy handled regularly accepts nail trimming as normal. Get clippers with a safety guard (we list no others) and clip a tiny amount every 3–4 weeks from early on.

Poop bags — just sort it out Must have
Biodegradable options cost the same as generic plastic and you'll use hundreds. Don't overthink it.

Supplements in the puppy stage: mostly wait
⚠️ Don't supplement too earlyMost joint supplements aren't appropriate for puppies still in growth phase. Adding extra calcium or certain compounds to a growing large-breed puppy can actually interfere with bone development. Always check with your vet before starting any supplement in the first year.
| Age | What's appropriate |
| 0–6 months | No supplements. A complete puppy food has everything they need. Growth plates are open — don't interfere. |
| 6–12 months | Fish oil is safe and useful. EPA/DHA from fish oil supports brain development, coat health, and gut lining. Keep the dose appropriate for body weight. Read why → |
| 12–18 months (large breeds) | Start the joint supplement conversation with your vet. Growth plates are closing. Large and giant breeds carry adult loads on their joints from here. |

Stage 2 · Adult · 1–7 years
Adult: the stable phase — but don't get complacent
This is the easiest stretch. Your dog is fully grown, the gear mostly fits, and the chaotic puppy phase is behind you. The main things to focus on now are maintenance — dental health doesn't improve on its own, and the foundations you set here determine how your dog ages.
🥣
Slow feeder bowl — especially for deep-chested breeds Nice to have
Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus) is a life-threatening condition most common in large, deep-chested breeds. A slow feeder reduces the risk meaningfully by slowing eating speed. For Great Danes, German Shepherds, Boxers, Weimaraners — this is worth having.

💊
Fish oil — genuinely the best-evidenced supplement Nice to have
If you start any supplement in the adult phase, start here. EPA and DHA from fish oil support joint health, coat condition, and reduce systemic inflammation. The American Animal Hospital Association lists omega-3s as a first-tier option for joint support.

Keep up with dental care Must have
Dental disease affects most dogs over age three. If you started young, keep going — consistency matters more than technique. If you're starting now, a chew toy brush can help while you build tolerance for direct brushing.

📅When to add joint supplements for large breeds
For large breeds (German Shepherds, Labradors, Boxers) consider starting glucosamine and green-lipped mussel from around 18 months to 2 years. For giant breeds (Great Danes, Saint Bernards), some vets recommend starting even earlier. The goal is prevention, not treatment — once cartilage is damaged it doesn't fully repair.

Stage 3 · Senior · 7+ years
Senior: when the small things start to matter
There's no fixed age. It's more about signs: slower mornings, reluctance to use stairs, less enthusiasm for the second half of a long walk, more time sleeping. Large breeds hit this earlier — Great Danes and similar from around 5–6 years, small breeds often not until 10–11.
This is when the bed stops being just a comfort item, and joint supplements stop being optional.
The bed upgrade
🧠
High-density memory foam
Memory foam contours to the dog's body and relieves pressure on sore joints. The critical word is high-density — cheap foam compresses flat within weeks and provides no benefit. Look for at least 7–8cm of foam depth.
🥚
Egg-crate or combo foam
The waffle surface distributes weight more evenly, reducing concentrated pressure on any single joint. The best senior beds combine egg-crate on top with memory foam beneath — soft support without sinking flat.
🏠
Bolster sides — genuinely useful, not just decorative
Raised sides give an arthritic dog something to lean against when lying down or getting up. Small difference in practice, meaningful difference in comfort. Check that the sides are firm enough to actually support weight — some are just stuffed with soft batting.
🚿
Waterproof lining — not optional Must have
Senior dogs are more likely to have bladder control issues. A waterproof inner layer (TPU or similar) protects the foam from accidents. You'll be washing the cover more frequently — make sure the zip and cover design make that genuinely easy.
Sizing for large senior dogsA 70 kg dog whose legs hang off the edge of a bed isn't getting any joint relief. The bed needs to be long enough for the dog to fully stretch out — nose to tail with room to spare. Most standard bed sizes don't cut it for giant breeds. Check dimensions against your dog's actual length before buying.
Joint supplements become essential
If you haven't started joint supplements yet, now is the time. The evidence for glucosamine, chondroitin, and green-lipped mussel is mixed for active prevention, but more consistent for dogs already showing signs of stiffness. Fish oil remains the best-evidenced option at any stage and should be ongoing.
| What | Why it matters now |
| Fish oil (omega-3) | Most evidence-backed. EPA/DHA reduce joint inflammation via the COX and LOX pathways. AAHA first-tier recommendation for joint support. |
| Green-lipped mussel | Contains a unique omega-3 profile not found elsewhere. Consistent evidence for improved mobility and reduced stiffness in dogs. |
| Glucosamine + chondroitin | Mixed evidence overall, but commonly recommended alongside other treatments. Evidence stronger for maintenance than repair. |
| Hyaluronic acid | Joint lubrication. Found in some premium formulations (YuMOVE, Veddelholzer). Good for dogs with stiffness rather than pain. |
