Chicken & Egg
Training Bites

๐Ÿ“… April 2026โฑ๏ธ 5 min readโœ๏ธ BudgetDoggo

Training treats need to be small, soft, and absolutely irresistible. These chicken and egg bites tick all three boxes. They're made from ingredients you likely already have, take about 30 minutes from start to finish, and can be cut to any size from "tiny training reward" to "genuinely substantial bribe."

โš ๏ธ Important before you start: Treats should not exceed 10% of your dog's daily calorie intake โ€” adjust meal portions accordingly on days you use lots of treats during training. Cook all chicken to an internal temperature of 74ยฐC (165ยฐF). Do not add salt, onion, garlic, or seasoning of any kind โ€” these are toxic to dogs. Introduce new treats gradually over 2โ€“3 days and watch for digestive changes.

Ingredients

1
Preheat your oven to 180ยฐC (350ยฐF) and line a baking tray with parchment.
Make sure your chicken is fully cooked before starting โ€” poach in plain water for 15โ€“20 minutes or use leftover roast chicken (no seasoning). Shred very finely with two forks or pulse briefly in a food processor.
2
Combine all ingredients.
In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded chicken, beaten eggs, yogurt, grated carrot, and salmon oil if using. Mix well. Add the oat flour and stir until a soft, scoopable batter forms โ€” it will be wetter than a firm dough.
3
Portion onto the tray.
Drop by teaspoon onto the lined tray. For very small training treats, use half a teaspoon. Flatten each one slightly โ€” they won't spread much during baking. They should be no thicker than about 1cm for even baking.
4
Bake until firm.
Bake for 18โ€“22 minutes until golden at the edges and firm to the touch. The centre should not feel soft or wet. Let them cool completely on a rack.
5
Store properly.
These treats contain egg and yogurt, so they need refrigerating โ€” keep in an airtight container for up to 5 days. For longer storage, freeze in a ziplock bag for up to 2 months. Take out a small batch each day and keep the rest frozen.

Why eggs are an excellent dog ingredient
Veterinary nutritionists rank eggs as one of the highest biological value protein sources available โ€” meaning dogs absorb and use a greater proportion of the amino acids compared to beef, chicken, or plant proteins. Eggs are also a natural source of lutein and zeaxanthin (eye health), selenium, and riboflavin. Cook all the way through โ€” raw egg whites contain avidin, which interferes with biotin absorption.

What chicken provides
Skinless, boneless, cooked chicken breast is lean, highly digestible, and broadly well-tolerated by dogs โ€” making it ideal for training treats where you're giving multiple pieces in quick succession. The carrot adds beta-carotene, fibre, and a slightly sweet flavour that most dogs enjoy.
